Keeping fit with your dog

Apart from the pleasure and love owning a dog brings to your life, another great reason for owning a dog is the benefits of exercise and fresh air taking your pet for a walk.

According to animal psycologists, dogs enjoy walks primarily because it is their way of keeping in contact with the outside world.

While all dogs enjoy a walk, some breeds like long hikes better than others.

Here is a list of the 'couch potatoes' of the canine world!

English Bulldog - A short squat dog and one of the many Brachycephalic (short nosed) breeds, these guys love nothing more than curling up on the sofa.

Shih Tzu - These little prima donnas enjoy a good walk but not in bad weather, their long silky coats don't do well in the rain and they will soon let you know if they want to go back home into the dry!

Chow Chow - These big cuddly bears are notoriously lazy and are renowned for being big cuddle monsters so move over on the sofa and make room.

Cavalier King Charles - These little bundles of energy love a good romp around the living room but their energy tends to come in short bursts so plenty of shorter walks suit them just fine.

Pug - Another of the Brachycephalic breeds, often suffer with breathing problems so shorter walks and plenty of ball play time in the garden.

Bull Mastiff - This giant breed is extremely laid back and one long walk a day is usually just right.

Despite the above, dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes need exercise, even your senior dog. Remember though, older dogs may have aches and joint pain, especially larger breeds so take this into account when out walking, especially if, like me, you have dogs of different ages.

If your older dog is showing signs of stiffness, take advice from your vet and also maybe consider supplements or oils to help ease aging joints.

Remember, young puppies need limited walks so even though they may be a little bundle of high energy, their bones and muscles are still developing and walks should be kept shorter until they are a little older.

Walks are not only good for our dogs but for us too! A cold dark winters morning doesn't tempt us out of the house easily but having a dog forces us out for a brisk walk. Great news for our health and a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery where we live.
